Sports injuries can happen during regular exercise or while playing a sport. They are common in all age groups. Increasing your risk for sports related injuries is caused by not warming up properly prior to starting an activity or not being active on a regular basis. Some of the most common sports injuries include tennis elbow, golf elbow, hamstring strain, sciatica, shin splints, concussions, knee ligament and tendon tears, hip flexor strains, shoulder injuries, and patellofemoral syndrome.
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and tylenol may be helpful. In addition, topical pain relievers, ice and/or heat, elevation, and compression may be beneficial. Referring a patient to physical therapy, occupational therapy, or aquatherapy is often extremely helpful.
