Therapeutic nerve blocks are used to treat painful conditions and typically contain a local anesthetic. Steroid injections may reduce inflammation, which contributes to pain. By reducing irritation, the nerves may better heal. Nerve blocks are often done to relieve pain so individuals can participate in physical therapy.
If a diagnostic nerve block is successful, a physician may recommend a radiofrequency nerve ablation to give a longer duration of pain relief. A genicular nerve block impedes the pain signal to the knee. Even patients who have had total knee replacements may continue to experience pain. A genicular nerve block is a minimally invasive procedure done under ultrasound or x-ray and typically produces excellent results.
