Back pain is one of the most common reasons a patient presents to the pain clinic. Discomfort of the back may be an ache, strain, or muscle spasm. There are many causes of back pain including spinal disc herniation, spinal stenosis, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, scoliosis, ankylosing spondylitis, spondylolisthesis, strains, arthritis, radiculopathy, poor posture, spasm, vertebral compression fracture, kidney infection, cauda equina syndrome, spondylosis, stress, osteomyelitis to name just a few. The list is long and extensive and there are even more potential causes of back pain. In some cases, no identifiable cause is found even with the most extensive examination.
Many treatment options for back pain are tailored to the individual patient and his/her needs. Treatments include at home remedies, oral nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications like ibuprofen, tylenol, topical rubs, physical therapy, interventional pain treatment, and in some cases surgery. After all conservative treatments are exhausted, medications like gabapentin, lyrica, and cymbalta are offered to improve patients' function. Some of the interventional procedures performed in the pain clinic to help with back pain include epidural steroid injections, facet nerve blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, and caudal injections.
